I'm not a huge fan of Ron English's work or most of that early to mid 90s juxtapoz low brow stuff... I hate clowns and I despise court jesters...I'm not a fan kitsch or hot rods and I don't like eating at Mcdonald nor am I a fan of it's mascot... Don't like neon or purple either... But I do admire Ron English's skill though and how his images quickly whip up feelings of white trashiness inside. Looking at these images, I feel like I'm sitting in the back seat of some hotrod, smelling the rank, seeing the fast food wrappers on the floor, hearing Kiss rip off Alice Cooper on the 8-track... he paints American culture that I don't enjoy. He embraces the low and brings it high and places it equal on a pedestal next to Jesus, and he does it well... and to say I don't like it is wrong. I do, but I wouldn't like to see it hanging at my home. Clowns kinda scare me and even though I may eat a McDonalds hamburger from time to time, I don't want to see it on my wall.

Let me say though that this is high quality book. The images are sharp and it's printed on nice glossy thick paper and is hard bound. A good one to collect or to win as...

One aspect of his work involves 'liberating' commercial billboards with his own messages. Frequent targets of his work include Joe Camel, McDonalds, and Mickey Mouse. Ron English can be considered the "celebrated prankster father of agit-pop", who wrangles carefully created corporate iconographies so that they are turned upside down, and are used against the very corporation they are meant to represent. Ron English has also painted several album covers including The Dandy Warhols album cover "Welcome to the Monkey House". Some of his paintings are also used in Morgan Spurlock's documentary Super Size Me.

Ron English has made quite a reputation for himself as an artist who doesn't play by the rules of polite society. He's been called the Robinhood of Madison Avenue for his seminal work in billboard subvertising and is widely considered, along with San Francisco's  legendary Billboard Liberation Front, to be a founding member of the Culture Jamming movement. A new CD ROM chronicles fifteen years of balls, energy and imagination courtesy of a unique artist and social commentator who drives his points home with offbeat wit and amazing technique. Also recently released is the CD "POPaganda", a rock opera of Ron's artistic sojourn to hell and back. I recently spoke with Mr. English at his Manhattan studio.
